Blog Action Day: Water Management for Urban City

Have you ever consider you life without water??



Can you live without water??



Do we have enough water for our daily life??



The answer of the first two question is NO and for the third!!



Many may say yes we have for the time being. I get the supply at my home in exchange of money.



But if you look around you cautiously you will get the scenario is not so favorable and it is said that the THIRD WORLD WAR will be for safe water.



What is happening in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, a developing country in water perspective. Are we getting enough water for our daily needs? The answer is NO. This is same for many cities around the globe.



Can't we do something by ourselves?



If we do a little rearrangements in our buildings we could save lots of water. Using this techniques we can also save lots of electricity. And finally our MONEY!!



So, what we can do?



Before, you start thinking, lets do a simple math.



First, consider that you are living in a four storied building and about 20 persons live there. All these people use the toilet everyday for at least one time and flash about 20 liters of water each time.



So, 20 x 20 = 400 liters of water needed for one day only for flashing!! (although the amount of use is much higher)



Now lets do some questions and answers:



Q. From where these water are coming to our home?

A. The Dhaka WASA (the water supply authority of Dhaka, Bangladesh) supply these to our underground water tank and we pay the bill to WASA



Q. How we upload these water to our overhead tank?

A. By using an electric motor (which use lots of electricity) and we pay the bill to DESA (Dhaka electric supply authority).



These water supplied by WASA is considered to be safe for washing and cooking but usually better to drink after boiling. The same water is also use for bathroom or toilet purpose!! Do we really need to use that 400 liters of water from WASA which costs a lot each month as well as when we are in the middle of water crisis for long as well as energy crisis!!



If we do a simple rearrangements in our existing building structures we could save lots of water everyday.



So, here goes my proposal:





The waters that we used for cooking, shower, washing, or other purposes daily in our home can be redirected to a separate reservoir (as described in the figure) located in each floor (rather than directly discarding the water to the sewerage line) and from there with a separate water line can be transferred to the loader of the commode and we can use that water instead of using supply water. While redirecting the water we have to use a suitable course filter, otherwise water clogging may occur.



So, if we can adopt this idea for high rise buildings, offices, and apartments then we could save hundreds of thousands of liters of water everyday, save lots of electricity and finally our MONEY!!
